What to pack to have fun at a festival with young children

The festival basics

  • Tissues and hand sanitzer in a bum bag, crossbody bag or your pocket AT ALL TIMES for festival loo trips.

  • Ear defenders for the kids and Loops for you - also fantastic for blocking out your kids whinging! I cannot tell you what a difference these make to my festival experience as it's like I can turn down the music by a couple of notches. Soooo good.

  • Credit card, ID, phone. Sun lotion, wet wipes, endless snacks, refillable water bottles. Tiny cordial squeezy bottle if your kids will drink more if water flavoured.

  • "If lost call" wrist bands for kids. Sometimes provided by festival in advance or get these. Put on kids before getting out of the car!

  • Picnic blanket for marking out your territory at the main stage! Lightweight packaway one or gorgeous Doc and Bay one.

  • Heavy duty buggy/trolley for transporting tent etc to camp and then children/chairs/booze around festival! We now only take ours to the arena after 6pm. Fantastic as then kids sleep in it while we are still enjoying the music. Check spec and go for one that can take a lot of weight if using for older kids/tent transport. You can hire metal trolley's like this at many festivals too. Add shade/raincover for versatility.

  • Decorate the above with fairy lights and garlands.

Fun extras

These are items that are commonly sold at festivals (ie.. every other child around yours has one and they want one too.) Buy in advance at a third of the price and spend the amount you save at the bar instead!

  • Bubble Gun - These sell at festivals for around £22 once you buy the gun, batteries and bubble mix. This Bubble Blaster model includes LED for after dark bubble fun and is re-chargable. (We take a power bank with us so can recharge phones/bubble machine on the go - remember your charging cable.)

  • Poi light up or fabric note your child will hit themselves in the head with these so fabric best for little ones or wear the ear defenders as protection while practising!

  • Plasticine modelling clay or Playdough mini pots.

  • Comics/pen and paper/ sticker books etc for them to play with while you listen to music.

Dressing up/Fancy Dress:

  • A fun festival hat ideally with lights, bunny or gold.

  • Temp Tattoos - These gold ones are amazing and last for days! (Note use a VERY wet flannel to apply - wet wipes do not cut it!)

Decorate your camp

  • I did this for the first time this year and loved coming back to our decorated and lit tent each evening. Flower garlands and solar powered fairy lights. Note these ones are not very bright but that's what I wanted to leave on all night.

  • Flag and pole. Some festivals ban flag poles so check in advance.

  • Rainbow flags.

  • Bunting.

  • Light up jellyfish. (Keep under cover not sure if rain proof.)

  • NOTE: Do not camp under trees however lovely it looks unless it's really really hot, camp will be in shade for part of the day therefore items won't dry if wet and tress come with birds that like to tell you it's morning very early.

  • Judge where to camp on how far you can carry your tent on day one versus time to walk back to tent 6/8/10 times during festival. Note distance from late night music tent too and slamming doors of festival loos. These will stink by last day.

Camping kit

  • Knife with safety cover.

  • Compression packing cubes

  • Dryrobes for adults and changing robes for kids green and pink, grey and orange.

  • Crocs for kids to easily take on or off as they go in and out of tent 1000 times. Also great for showering kids if you are that brave! (PS use showers between midday and 6pm as no-one uses them then!)

  • Tent

  • Porch

  • Air beds

  • Raised beds great for storage underneath, keep warm, better for back!

  • Tent cabinet - amazing to store everything off the floor.

  • Camp chairs

  • Lights

  • Stove

  • Party BBQ
